They’re the ones that execute good ideas exceptionally well. Microsoft and its Window OS is a strong example, as well as iterations of its Office suite. Neither were best in class, but the firm’s ability to execute under Bill Gates made them the default solution in the enterprise space for years.
Belief in Sustained Action
Insight and focus get you started, but belief will keep you moving forward when the inevitable obstacles appear.
Genuine belief is earned confidence, which is conviction in your insight, your team’s ability to execute, and your ability to adapt when realities on the ground don’t match your projections.
This is where many technical leaders struggle. They’re trained to be skeptical, to poke holes in approaches, and to find flaws. But at some point, healthy skepticism becomes paralyzing doubt. Risk management is always a key leadership skill but moving beyond the available evidence is critical.
Breaking Through the Hesitation Trap
The next time you find yourself stuck between thinking and doing, ask these questions:
For Insight:
- What pattern am I seeing that others might miss?
- What would I bet my reputation on?
For Focus:
- If I could only do one thing in the next 90 days, what would create the most meaningful progress?
For Belief:
- What evidence do I have that we can execute this successfully?
- What would I need to see to increase my confidence?
CEOs who consistently break through understand that insight, focus, and belief are the essential ingredients that transform thinking into doing and doing into winning.
These are the same questions I use professionally and personally to find clarity and move forward. So, I know they work.
The Subtle Power of Forward Motion
Momentum in my view is about direction with energy. Even slow progress, if consistent and intentional, can outpace competitors stuck in cycles of pause and ponder.
In martial arts, hesitation in the middle of a technique breaks its flow and gives the opponent an opening. In business, hesitation in the middle of scaling gives the market that same opening.
Don’t provide them with that opportunity.
Build that bridge with insight, focus, and belief and you’ll move with purpose and clarity.
